Sir Reginald’s Logbook is a fun and wacky book for children, ages 5 to 9, to get excited about! A story of imagination, Sir Reginald’s Logbook gets kids thinking about how they can use their creative minds to have an adventure right at home - whether it’s hunting down a sacred artifact or avoiding the claws (or jaws) of the fierce pet sitting unexpectingly around the corner.
Written and illustrated by Matt Hammill, Sir Reginald’s Logbook (Kids Can Press, ISBN 978-1-55453-202-5) encourages adventures of the mind. From the silly Sir Reginald (who is somewhat like Professor Caractacus Pott in the movie Chitty Chitty Bang Bang) to the poor pooch who is portrayed as a fearsome beast, Matt Hammill keeps kids giggling.
The Story
The book begins with a silly old man, Sir Reginald, dressed in his pajamas and slippers. In Reginald’s mind, he is dressed in his finest jungle attire, from hat to boots. He leaps out of bed and heads off through an imaginary jungle to find the magical “Lost Tablet of Illusion.”
He first goes to a sacred pedastal where the artifact is meant to be, but, alas, the magical tablet is not there. There are strange paw prints surrounding the area. What could it mean? A strange and fearsome beast must have run off with the “Lost Tablet of Illusion.”
Our hero, the brave Sir Reginald, goes off in search of the tablet and the fearsome beast that has it. He follows the footprints to the monstrous beast (the dog) and, to the amazement of all, he tickles the Fido monster, gets back the “Lost Tablet of Illusion,” and escapes to the very top of the temple (a dog house).
With tablet (remote control) in hand, Sir Reginald settles down into comfy chair and prepares to feast on the powers of illusion (the television) when, all of a sudden, a new adventure is discovered and Sir Reginald is off and running.
Imagination
Imagination is the single most important thing parents and teachers can inspire children to use. Imagination helps kids “see” what they are reading and it inspires children to act out new rolls, such as an adventurer or mad scientist. It also gets kids up and moving about. Sir Reginald’s Logbook is a fun way to jump start the imagination, especially on rainy days when kids have to play indoors. The story gets kids laughing and thinking about their own adventure waiting for them inside their home.
